Did Christ went and preached to the Souls in Prison?

‎1 Pet 3 :19By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

The above verse is used to teach that Jesus went to hell to preach to the unrepented souls.

So the above teaching gives rise to the belief that there is a chance of repentance after death (something like purgatory teaching in catholism)

Let us examine this biblically.

The passage appears to teach that Jesus went to hell to preach to unrepented souls because of CUMBERSOME TRANSLATION.

Bible says once we die the next thing is judgement there is no second chance.

Hebrews 9:27
And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

A parallel verse to 1 Pet 3:19 is Psalm 142:7 Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name: the righteous shall compass me about; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me.

So it does not mean Jesus preached to “spirit being without body’ which were in prison. Because David uses a similiar language ‘bring my soul out of prison’

When you are evangelizing what do you refer that to saving souls it means saving persons.

When was this preaching done which is being refered in 1 Pet 3:19, who did the preaching.

We need to study the whole passage which will give us the correct context.

18For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

19By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

20Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

In verse 18 it says Jesus was put to death but he was quickened BY THE SPIRIT. We need to note this very carefully. HE WAS QUICKENED BY THE SPIRIT. It is not in the spirit but by the spirit. It is Holy Spirit who resurrected Jesus. God the Father resurrected Jesus through His Holy Spirit.

In Verse 19 it says BY WHICH (by Holy Spirit) he (Jesus) went and preached unto the spirits in prision. What is prision here Paul says “bringing me into captivity to the law of sin.” David says soul out of prision. Prison here is the captivity of sin.

Jesus preached through Holy Spirit to the souls in the prison of sin. When did He preach them. Note nowhere it says Jesus went to these spirits after He is dead and in spirit He went. But verse 20 says
when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah,

In this doc you can see that death is a period of unconciousness. For example

Eccl. 9:5,6,10 “For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.Whatsoever thy hand finds to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither you go.

Psalms 6.5 For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?

Psalms 146.4 His breath goes forth, he returns to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.

Job 14.10-15 But man dies, and wastes away: yes, man gives up the ghost, and where is he? So man lies down, and rises not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep. O that you would hide me in the grave, that you would keep me secret, until your wrath be past, that you will appoint me a set time, and remember me! If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my
change come. Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee:
